Random Acts of Kindness Day

February 1, 2012 is the first annual “Random Acts of Kindness Day” in St. Thomas, Ontario and everyone is encouraged to participate.

Random Acts of Kindness Day is about doing nice things “just because” and without expecting anything in return. Random Acts of Kindness don’t have to be expensive or elaborate. It could be simple gestures such as holding the door open for someone, letting someone go ahead of you in line, bringing some treats for the break room, or putting your shoes away so your significant other doesn’t trip on them when they come in the door.

People have a lot on their plate right now. The job market isn’t fantastic, gas prices always make me want to tear my hair out a little bit, I’m always shocked at the price of chicken, and the word “Budget” is on everyone’s lips. Random Acts of Kindness make the receiver think “Hey! Someone noticed, someone cares. Perhaps this world isn’t such a bad place after all!” And perhaps they’ll enjoy that idea so much, that they do a Random Act of Kindness for someone else, thereby finding out the win-win situation of doing a good deed. It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy!  If you’re still a little leery about the whole idea or you’re just not into “warm and fuzzy,” just try smiling at someone or saying “Thank you.” You won’t believe the impact it could have.

I always think that it’s the little things in life that make a difference and on Random Acts of Kindness Day, everyone has the opportunity to make someone’s life just a little more awesome. So tomorrow, keep your eye open for opportunities to show a little kindness and see the kind of difference one simple act can make.
