Temporary Part-Time Casual Circulation Support – Level 1
for a Maternity Leave Replacement

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Acting Circulation Supervisor, checks materials in and out of the library; registers patrons; collects fines and fees; modifies patron records; answers telephone inquires and directs calls; mends materials; sorts and shelves materials; assists patrons with using the catalogue and finding materials.

Hours of Work:   

Casual hours – an average of 14 hours per week over a 6 week schedule including a combination of days, evenings and Saturdays.
Additional hours will also be required, occasionally on short notice, during illness or vacation.

Wage Rate:

$19.17 – $23.94 hourly

Qualifications:

Secondary School Graduation Diploma.  Experience in public service.  Ability to meet the public with courtesy and tact and to maintain confidentiality of patron information.  Proficiency in keyboarding, experience with computer data bases and cash registers.  Ability to handle multiple tasks.  An interest in and knowledge of authors and books would be an asset.

Major Tasks:

1. Responsible for circulation of library materials.

2. Registers patrons and modifies patron records.

3. Collects fines and fees, gives change, maintains patron accounting, issues receipts, and is responsible for the cash register and cash book.

4. Notifies patrons regarding overdue materials with 3-day notice periods.

5. Answers telephone inquiries and directs calls.

6. Mends materials.

7. Sends faxes for the public.

8. Sorts and shelves materials.

9. Assists patrons with using the catalogue and finding materials.

10. This position must take responsibility for personal health and safety insofar as he or she is able under The Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations.

A worker must:
(a) Work in compliance with the provisions of the Act, the regulations and City policies.

(b) Use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that the City requires to be used or worn.

(c) Report to his or her supervisor the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger himself, herself or another worker.

(d) Report to his or her supervisor any contravention of the Act, the regulations
or the existence of any hazard of which he or she knows.

This position shall not:
(a) Remove or make ineffective any protective device required by regulations or by the City, without providing an adequate temporary protective device and when the need for removing or making ineffective the protective device has ceased, the protective device shall be replaced immediately.

(b) Use or operate any equipment, machine, device or thing or work in a manner that may endanger himself, herself or any other worker.

(c) Engage in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Part-Time Library Assistant 1

Children’s & Teens’ Services

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Department Head, answers questions of patrons and assists them in selecting books and locating information and assists with the operation of the Department.

Hours of Work:

15 hours per week – including days, evenings and Saturdays

12 hours in Children’s and Teens’ Services, and

3 hours in Adult Services

Additional hours may also be required, occasionally on short notice, during illness or vacation

Wage Rate:

$20.81 – $26.00 per hour

Qualifications:

A B.A. or B.Sc. Degree from a recognized university.  Skills should include an interest in reading and a knowledge of materials suitable for the clients being served.  Proficiency with computers, experience in Internet searching, effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to meet the public with courtesy and tact.

Major Tasks:

1. Assists in the provision of reference and readers’ advisory services using materials in a variety of formats including print and Internet, matching material with appropriate age and reading development levels.

2. Assists in selecting a collection of reading materials in response to patron requests, including for teachers, Home Library Service patrons, book clubs and parent book picks.

3. Coordinates displays to enhance the library collection and to promote reading.

4. Selects and organizes materials for specialized collection.

5. Assists with the preparation and distribution of publicity and programming materials.

6. Compiles and produces booklists and other publications.

7. Collects holds, processes interlibrary loans or recommends items for purchase as required.

8. Plans, organizes and manages programs.

9. Assists and instructs patrons in using equipment including online catalog and public access computers, microfilm readers, photocopier/printers.

10. Assists in general maintenance of collection, including shelving and shelf-reading

11. Keeps informed of related advances and available material.
