Earth Hour 2014
Earth Hour is coming. This year it takes place on Saturday, March 29th from 8:30-9:30 pm. During this hour, businesses and residents across the planet will turn off their lights to acknowledge that as a global community, we need to strive for sustainability in all we do.
Earth Hour was started by the World Wildlife Fund and began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. It has since become a global movement: last year, more than 7000 cities and towns in 153 countries and territories participated. Earth Hour is held at the end of March, close to the Spring Equinox in the northern hemisphere and the Fall Equinox in the southern hemisphere, because at this time of year the sun sets during the same hour around the world, roughly 8:30 in local time-zones.
To take part in Earth Hour, all you have to do is switch off your lights for one hour. It is a way to opt out in the spirit of sustainability. It’s also a time to consider if we can opt out of other things to help cut down our ecological footprint. Maybe take a to-go mug to the coffee shop with you instead of using a paper cup. When shopping, choose the product that has the least amount of packaging. Or hang up your clothes to dry instead of using the dryer. Use old rags to clean (wash and use again!) instead of using disposable wipes and paper towels all the time. Simple things add up, and sometimes opting-out can save money as well as reduce your ecological footprint!
