St. Thomas Public Library has a subscription to the online database Alt Health Watch – an amazing resource with information about all kinds of holistic and complementary medicine. What’s more, all of the articles come from reputable journals and reports, so you know that the information you find can be trusted!

Alt Health Watch is part of the EBSCO database family – which makes it easy to use!

The main page has a very simple search box – just type in your keyword and hit “search”!alt health 2

As an example, I did a search for “aromatheraphy” – you can see that I got over 1,000 results!

If you look at the left-hand side of the page, you can see some tools that will allow you to narrow your results – and it’s a good thing too – because it would take far too long to look through over 1000 different articles!

You can choose to limit your results in many different ways: you can display only those articles which are available in full-text, those that were published only in the last 10 years, or those that were published only in magazines, for example.

The first article, “Aromatheraphy for pain relief” looks interesting – let’s click it!

When you click the article, you get to a page that summarizes the document – you see the author, where and when it was published, as well as the abstract.

To get to the full article, you just have to click “PDF Full Text” on the left-hand side of the page.

There are other useful tools available on the right-hand side of the page, for example:

  • You can email the record to yourself, in case you want to check it again later,
  • Or you can get the citation information if you are going to use this article in a research paper!

As you can see, this is a very powerful database with tons of information! So the next time you have a question about alternative medicine, be sure to check Alt Health Watch first!

Give it a try, and let us know how you like it!
