Reason #50: Kids love the Summer Reading Club

The Summer Reading Club is a staple in ANY Canadian public library. And it certainly is something to celebrate at St. Thomas Public Library!

I am excited to join the Summer Reading Club because… it’s fun to read and it’s funner if you get to win because you read.

First, recognition needs to be given to the sponsors of the TD Summer Reading Club. The title sponsor is TD Canada Trust, is developed by Toronto Public Library and in partnership with Library and Archives of Canada (Federal Government.)

This year’s theme for TD Summer Reading Club is “EUREKA!” This summer, kids can spark their inspiration as we tinker, invent and create! By registering, each “inventor” has access to: Eureka Picture TD Summer Reading Club logo

  • An official “Eureka!” magazine
  • A notebook to record books read
  • Daily crafts and activities
  • Weekly draws and giveaways.

Registration for TD Summer Reading Club begins TODAY, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 and continues throughout the summer. For a list of daily drop-in activities, registration required programs, and free movie afternoons, please visit the library’s online calendar of programs and events. Registering for the Summer Reading Club is FREE OF CHARGE and all programs, events,  activities, and movies are FREE to participate in! You can register for programs in person, or call the Children’s & Teens’ Information Desk at 519-631-6050 ext. 8015.


Weekly Lego Draws: Guess how many Lego blocks are in the container on the Children’s & Teens’ Information Desk. The closest guess wins!

Weekly Book Prizes: Be sure to show your Summer Reading Club Notebook of recorded books read every time you visit the library to receive your ballot. You get to pick which prize you’d like a chance to win!

Free Movie Fridays: St. Thomas Public Library is featuring six free family films this summer every Friday at 2 PM in the Carnegie Room beginning Friday, July 11. Space is limited for each film. Free tickets can be picked up to reserve your spot at 1:30 PM on the day of the movie. For a full list of movies, view the library’s calendar of events.

End of Summer Party: Wednesday, August 20, 2014 from 2-4 PM. Join us as we celebrate everyone’s reading success this summer. We have carnival games to play from our Cardboard Challenge Day and other fun activities. St. Joseph’s renaissance Robotics Team will also be at the party with their competition robot, Rambot, to show off some of his cool tricks! No registration required. All ages – everyone registered for the TD Summer Reading Club is welcome!

Mad Science:

FANTASTIC FLIERS! Monday, July 21 @ 2-3 PM, Ingram Activity Centre | Ages 5 – 12 | Registration Required. Join the Mad Science crew and take a ride with the Write Brothers in this interactive class on flight!

JUNIOR ENGINEERS! Wednesday, August 13 @ 10-11 AM, Ingram Activity Centre | Ages 5 – 12 | Registration Required. Join the Mad Science crew and become a famous engineer like Eiffel or Bollman! Learn what the pros know about building structures in this interactive workshop.


Lego Mindstorms Robots:

We have partnered with St. Joseph’s High School’s Renaissance Robotics Team to offer a very exciting Lego Mindstorm Robotics program. If you’re between the ages of 9 and 12, join us for this two day workshop to learn how to build and program a robot. Space is limited and registration is required. Three workshops available: July 15 & 16, July 29 & 30, August 11 & 12.


Young Writers’ Club:

Book-making Workshop! Thursday, July 17, 6-8 PM, Carnegie Room | Ages 8-12 | Registration Required.Create a one-of-a-kind book and begin a masterpiece. Transform old, discarded hardcover books into beautiful new books ready for your own stories. All materials are provided. Bring your wildest imagination!
Collaborative Large Book! Thursday, August 14, 6-8 PM, Carnegie Room | Ages 8-12 | Registration Required. Work with other young writers to create a shared story on over-sized paper which will be bound into an enormous book to be displayed in the library. All materials are provided. Bring your funniest, scariest, most outlandish story ideas and we’ll build them all into a fantastic, enormous book!


Stop Animation Workshop: Wednesday, August 13 @ 2 PM, Ages 8+| Registration Required.  Learn how stop animation works and create a short film using our iPads.


Teen Book Club: July 24 and August 24 @ 4 PM, Carnegie Room | Ages 14+ | NO registration required. July’s book is “Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell. Pick up a copy at the Circulation Desk in the Children’s & Teens’ Department on the lower level, read it, and join us for a discussion and snacks! (August book to be announced.)
