Good News for Parents!

Literacy Kits have come to the library! So what are literacy kits exactly? Studies show that children learn through play and with this in mind, staff have compiled early literacy activities and grouped them into themes. Each kit comes in it’s own small tote with one barcode, so all you have to do is pick a theme, scan one barcode, and you and your tote are ready for fun (and learning!) The Literacy Kits are located in the Children’s & Teens’ Department on the lower level of the library.

Each kit contains:

  • 3 books
  • 1 music CD
  • a craft idea
  • props for role play
  • games and worksheets
  • songs and fingerplays related to its theme

Interactive play promotes early literacy and enriches the lives of both child and parent. Our hope is that as parents and children discover the activities in each kit, parents will be able to stimulate a love of reading in their child. Literacy kits are also a useful tool for grandparents, daycare providers and early childhood educators.

Some of the themes include:

  • Pet Parade
  • Festival of Food
  • Down on the Farm
  • It’s a Bug’s Life
  • On the Go
  • Rumble in the Jungle
  • First Nations
  • Hop Hop by the Pond
  • Friends to the End
  • And many more!

Have a look and place a hold via the library’s online catalogue!
